Letter From Rasa

Dear brother or sister in Christ, Greetings in the Lord from my home in Lithuania to yours! I trust your Christmas has been blessed and pray that the New Year knocks on your door with a deeper and better understanding of God’s love for you through Jesus Christ! In the beginning I would like to shortly introduce myself. My name is Rasa (meaning ‘dew’). I was born in Lithuania , Klaipeda in 1980 and was raised in a traditional Roman Catholic family. Even though I grew up knowing the story of God and believing it, I did not understand the value of Jesus’ death and resurrection until the end of my first year of university in 2000. That year I came across Youth With A Mission, where God introduced Himself to me through Christ as the Lord of my life. I began to learn what the fellowship of believers really meant, what gifts God gave me, and how much He actually loved me. As a result, I started attending Klaipeda Free Christian Church (it has Anabaptist affiliation and is the community I am a member of to this day) and also made a decision to major in theology. However, the greatest joy to my heart was that I began to sing (something I dreamt about all my life), and the more I did it the more encouragement and approval I received. So I joined a worship team at my church, led worship in chapels at the university, and basically helped with worship leading anywhere where there was a need. Today my journey of faith continues through fellowship with other believers, ministry (worship leading, youth ministry, Bible studies), daily Scripture reading, and prayer. It’s both, a daily struggle and a GREAT JOY! While at university, I started thinking about a vocation in missions’ field that would combine music, theater, and youth ministry. Namely it meant merging the God given talents together in order to serve Him. However, since my graduation from LCC International University in 2004 with BA in theology, my life can be compared to being lost in the woods. In four years from graduation I worked as a cabin stewardess on a cruise-liner, as an English language tutor, as a social worker, as an interpreter/translator, served with youth and always ended in frustration dreaming about further studies. I was wondering whether I should just choose youth ministries or focus more on developing my talents in music until I came across a book of Nicky Cruz entitled Soul Obsession. Through this book, God not only reminded me of a personal covenant or a plan He had for my life, but He had utterly sealed it in my heart. Something I had heard about many times before, but never actually grasped the essence of, became real. Instead of just knowing, I began to believe that God does have a very specific calling for me (just as Ephesians 2:10 puts it: “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do”). So I began asking Him what it was that He was calling me to. The answer I received is a vision of becoming a music evangelist, which matches the desire of my heart to inspire worship to God through music as well as my concern for reaching people for Christ. I also believe that because music is a very powerful instrument and a sensory language the contemporary world understands rather well with God’s assistance it can be used in great ways for bringing people to Christ and worshiping Him. The first step I see the Lord leading my response in accomplishing this vision is to do a so called the Youth With A Mission (YWAM) pursuits Music and Worship Discipleship Training School (DTS) in New Zealand and then pursue the degree of Associate of Arts in Music at the YWAM University of the Nations. DTS is a standardised YWAM course throughout New Zealand and the world aiming at equipping Christians to be and make disciples of Jesus Christ. To achieve this goal, four main aims are emphasized: knowing God as a Christian, mandate of the Christian, methods of the Christian, and character of the Christian. The school is a live-in 6 month course arranged in two parts: a lecture phase (approximately twelve weeks) followed by twelve weeks of outreach. In addition, this particular DTS program in New Zealand not only is centered upon the Great Commission of Christ, but also focuses on the gift of worship through music, and is registered with the University of the Nations (which is important for I am considering further studies there). Although DTS is offered in different countries all over the world, the DTS with this particular focus on music and worship is not available in Europe . The school in New Zealand starts on February 21, 2009 and the total cost of it including the plane fare is $7200 USD. I trust that with this training God is going to help me walk the first steps towards His vision for my life. In the end, I would greatly appreciate your prayers. Please pray: - for openness, humility, and sensitivity to the voice of the Lord in my heart, mind and soul - for boldness in the walk of faith - for this mission to bring my family to Christ (because they look at it from a secular perspective and think I am destroying my life) as well as to be a blessing and encouragement to my family in Christ - for my church and friends as I go - and for financial provision Sincerely yours in Christ, Rasa Janonyte Gedminu g. 18-46 Klaipeda, LT-94223 Lithuania +37068931180 rasajanonyte@gmail.com P.S. Good News from the East

To all my friends and family, grace and peace to you on this Wednesday (what for me is Thursday),
I want to tell you about the exciting week we have had in Klaipeda! On Sunday we ended a 3 day Christian youth from conference called SaltShaker, where we had 154 youth coming together for one purpose to worship the Lord and get to know Him better. This was an inter-denominational, international conference and included students from 5 countries. What an exciting time! I have included some pictures from the conference. Including a worship service and a service project in which the teens passed out free (nemokama) tea, (arbata) when it was about 15 degrees outside

. It was so cold I was there to photograph but I had to take them up on their offer of free tea. This was a great way to serve the community. As soon as the conference ended, Miesto Baznycia (City Church) celebrated an Agape Dinner tonight where we celebrated the anniversary of the church and ate together in fellowship. We celebrated the past year and looked forward to what God has in store for the future. We have started a building project called MANA and things are moving in a positive direction. We have put the finishing touches on 5 rooms before we had to pause for winter and wait for the spring when we have heat to continue to finish more rooms. I am very excited to put the finishing touches on the Cornerstone Kids rooms in the Spring. This summer at Miesto Baznycia we are planning many different outreach events to be happening in and around the building. We haven’t got all the dates scheduled but starting around June 1st up until August 15th there will be a need for people to come and serve here in Lithuania, youth and adults alike. That said, Pastor Saulius and I would like to extend an invitation to you or anyone you might know who is looking for a short term missions trip to prayerfully consider serving Lithuania. If you are interested please contact me at dweston50@yahoo.com or 1.740.251.4234.I want to thank you for your prayers for direction for my future. I would like ask you to continue to pray that God will lead and I will follow. Finally I have a huge praise! Two weeks ago I emailed a letter (I will attach it again) from my friend and sister in Christ, Rasa, as she shared her wished to go to New Zealand for missionary training and a 3 month outreach. She aspires to become a missionary and bring Jesus to the nations through music. I am so excited about the possibility of helping enable someone from Lithuania answer the call God has placed on her life. Well, three days ago, I was very touched as my brother Brock called and told me that the first support checks for Rasa had already come in. This was so encouraging, not only for Rasa, but to the whole Christian community here as Rasa shares how God is miraculously providing for her through you and other Christians around the world. If you would like to write Rasa and share a word of encouragement with her as she prepares for her journey, or to get on her email list; you can write her at rasajanonyte@gmail.com.

I have had a few questions about how to receive tax receipts for gifts to Rasa. I have found out that her financial obligation for DTS is split into 2 parts. Airfare- This money must go personally to Rasa and can be sent through Brock as mentioned in the letter.and All the rest- All the rest is tax deductible and YWAM will email the receipt and letter on official letterhead and will give a copy of the receipt to Rasa to mail out as well. In order to get these receipts donations can be given two ways:Checks can be made out to YWAM Pursuits And mailed to YWAM Pursuits Crystal Springs, 287 Springs Road, RD 1 Matamata 2271, NEW ZEALAND Or bank transfers can be made directly to YWAM as well ASB Bank LimitedHighland Park BranchAct Number 12-3089-0242375-00Youth With A Mission Pursuits NZSwift Code ASB BNZ 2AReference Number: Rasa Janonyte Please feel free to contact me at Skype: daniel.westoniidweston50@yahoo.com or if you want you can call toll free from Marion, Ohio 1.740.4243Thank you so much for your love and care and continued support,Dan

Help For Rasa

Dear Family and Friends,
The purpose of this letter is twofold. First I want to say how fantastic of a time it was to see some of you over the holidays. I had fantastic time reconnecting and reengaging in your lives. I have a praise to report! While I was home the Lord provided an opportunity for me to get a job working online with Dallas Baptist University for 15 hours a week so that I will be able to do that while in Lithuania this spring. This will provide some of the necessary funds to help keep me afloat and I am truly grateful to the Lord and to DBU’s president Dr. Cook for this opportunity.
Upon return to Lithuania this week I have started a new semester of classes. I have 93 new students this semester and am very excited to get to know them and share in their lives.
Please pray for this upcoming semester and my students, and also pray that the Lord will lead and direct my path as I seek His will and direction in my life.
Secondly, I want to introduce you to Rasa, one of my Lithuanian friends. Rasa regularly attends and serves at City Church as well as being a member at the Free Christian Church here in Klaipeda, Lithuania. She aspires to become a missionary and I welcome you to read her story I have attached her letter. I can tell you that I have met very few people who have a bigger heart for the Lord. I can think of nothing better for Rasa than to be in the ministry. Rasa has a beautiful voice and in two weeks will lead the worship singing for a huge youth evangelism conference at LCC. Rasa is absolutely fluent in English and often translates sermons for myself and other native English speakers. I would encourage you to contact her by email: rasajanonyte@gmail.com if you have any questions or if you would like to encourage her as she prepares to begin preparation to become a missionary. Thank you for taking the time to read her letter. My brother Brock and I are helping her collect funds in the US and will make sure they will get to her. I am sooo excited and hope you are about helping someone from Klaipeda fulfill the great commission.
Thanks for your love and support

Merry Christmas

Hello and Merry Christmas from Lithuania,
I can’t believe it is almost Christmas time already. Time has really flown by. This November I was blessed to have Cade my youngest brother fly out to spend Thanksgiving with me. It was so exciting! We cooked a 27 pound turkey and “fixins” for 18 people. We celebrated an American thanksgiving with friends from Latvia, Lithuania, Senegal, and America. This was sooo fun and such a contrast to last year when I had only been in Lithuania a few months and celebrated alone in McDonalds. God has surly blessed me with wonderful friends here now. I am attaching some pictures of our Thanksgiving feast.
I want to tell you some of the good things happening at Miesto Baznycia (City Church). We have just started the celebrate recovery 12 step program for alcoholics and families members of alcoholics and there were 24 people at the first meeting and about 25 family members coming for emotional support. This is different from an AA meeting because of the biblical teachings used in the meetings. Although to protect the privacy I can’t mention anybody by name but please know this is a very exciting step in a positive direction for Lithuania. There are 5 men traveling 150 kilometers a week for this recovery program. I will attach the celebrate

recovery principles in an attachment if you would like to see them and more can be found out at http://www.celebraterecovery.com/. Please pray for this program as it will go for 24 weeks straight. And please pray for the men dependant on alcohol as they struggle with there addiction.
If you would like to learn more about our church and what we are doing in Lithuania you can always go to our website http://www.m-b.lt/ it is translated into English. And all sermons preached in English are posted on the English page.
Life at LCC is winding down for the semester. I gave a final exam today and will give another tomorrow. The students are tired and ready for a break. Many will travel back to their home countries over Christmas break. This also gives the opportunity for faculty to visit family and friends and I am very excited to be coming back to spend some time with mine this holiday season. I will be in Dallas for a few days and back to Ohio on Dec 23rd.
There have been a few interesting things happen over here that I thought note worthy. LCC had an all community spiritual life dinner which was attended by about 150 students and faculty. The menu was simple spaghetti bake and salad, but unfortunately some of the beef must have been bad and it made over 50 sick. I was one of the worst cases, presumably because I ate the most food, going back 3 times for extras, (I am never one to turn down a free meal). I was violently sick for a few days but thankfully I lost 10 unneeded pounds J
Second, this Friday my car was broken into and my phone and radio were stolen. With the crisis in full swing in Lithuania many people have been laid off. Theft is up and will continue to rise. But God provides and protects so I don’t worry about these things. When John Haller was finished working at the church he had left me his old cell phone so I would have a spare just in case so even in that the Lord provided.
Please continue to pray: for God’s wisdom as I consider what to do next year, His continued protection, celebrate recovery, my students, and our church building “Mana” that it would shine out to Klaipeda and a be a light to the community.
If you would like to partner with me and become a financial supporter of my ministry in Lithuania there are many ways to give

Building Update

I write to you to bring you good news from Lithuania. The Lord is at work here and there is much to talk about. I want to also give God the praise for the progress being made on the church building. Some of this progress was made possible by the wonderful giving at Cornerstone Kids VBS. For those of you who don’t know, our church is going through a renovation project for a building purchased in Lithuania. One day it will serve host to a counseling center, the church offices, and also host a halfway house for alcoholics. We have had many people working on the rooms but as it has gotten colder finishing touches on Cornerstones six rooms will be completed in the spring. But I have pictures of the some of the renovation process done by a team from Mississippi. Some of you also know John Haller. I have been blessed to have him volunteering on the building in Lithuania too. John and I have completed the kitchen and the bathroom in the building. John has a great attitude and personality and has tackled any job we have given him, such as; unclog the outside sewer pipes (twice), dig through 2 plus feet of concrete and cleaned out many rooms. He has been such a great encouragement to me.
He is leaving to come back to the US in a week but will take a piece of Lithuania with him and his impact on the people here will be felt for a long time. There has been a bit of sad news at the church building as well. A man named Darrius, a recovering alcoholic and a very gifted builder was renovating some of the rooms in the church had a relapse and broke into the building and stole the pastor’s computer and his wife’s violin as well as a few other things. Thankfully he took them to the local pawn shop and the church was able to buy them back for only a 10% loss. The sadder story is that Darrius has left our church community and started drinking again. Last I heard he was homeless. It is my prayer that he will return to our church and one day find Jesus’ forgiveness. But on a brighter note, I would like to report a HUGE praise. I had requested that many of you would pray the Lord would send me a guy friend, someone I could trust and have fun with. Well the Lord has answered our prayers in God sized portions. I want to tell you the story. I met a guy named Antanas, 25 years old while we were ice-skating. I knew that he fixed bikes and I had wrecked mine in the woods. I took my bike to him, the day before I left for America, in May and he pounded on the frame for 4 hours. When he finished he did not charge me his only request was that I could carry back some things from America for him. I thought this was a fair trade so I said ok. While I was in the states Antanas as ocean kiting on the Baltic sea when his board safety string broke. He was swimming in the cold Baltic for almost 3 hours before making it to shore. Needless to say this shook him up. When I returned back to Lithuania Antanas had recovered and decided to surprise me by driving his car 4 hours to the airport to pick me up. I was so surprised. Antanas ended up coming to our church’s camp with me and then coming to a few teenage church camps our church hosted. Somewhere in the process we became good friends and also about two months ago Antanas got saved. PRAISE THE LORD! And in true Antanas fashion he also decided to be married and to do so in two weeks. The night before the wedding Antanas called and asked if I would be his “liudytojas” or what Americans would call a best man. I was so blessed and happy to finally find a friend here. I have attached a picture of Antanas and I from his wedding. School has started at LCC and I am not coaching this year. I am at a total peace with this decision. I am teaching Statistics and Economics full time. I have 96 students from approximately 14 different countries. This is an interesting time to teach Economics. Every day I am given questions about the crisis and to be honest I don’t fully understand it myself. I know it is on the news every day. Crisis, Crisis, Crisis! And my students are worried. Worried for their families and worried in general. I would ask that when you think of it, to pray for my students and their families in the midst of crisis. I also want to introduce you to a few people God has brought into my life here in Lithuania. The first man I want to mention is Vidmontas. He pictured between John and I. Vidmontas was working in London when he became involved with the hate group called The Skin Heads. He came back to Lithuania and quickly became the leader of The Skins here in Klaipeda. He was jailed twice the second time for 6 months for beating up a Chinese couple and putting them in the river. But one day God got a hold of Vidmontas’ life and about 11 months ago he was saved. That day he ripped 6 swastika tattoo’s off his fingers. Vidmontas has an amazing spirit and fire for the Lord. Please keep him in your prayers has he tries to reach the seemingly unreachable. Secondly, I want to mention Valentine, I met Valentine at our churches camp. He had been brought there with some other orphans. His is a very sad story, His father committed suicide and his mother is a prostitute. He grew up drinking beer for dinner at the age of 4 and 5. 3 times he has tried to commit suicide. Twice with poison and 1 time he jumped off a dock with a rope tied to his leg and a rock. He claims, the only reason he is alive is both times he vomited the poison and the rope broke. I told him that the only reason he is alive is because God was not ready to let him go and He loves him and has big plans for his life. After explaining God's love and forgiveness he was very interested so I will ask you to pray for Valentine. He really is quite messed up right now as you could imagine. He is 17 and still in high school. He hasn’t been back to church but I get a text message from him from time to time. He is pictured sitting on the beach alone, the same way I first saw him. Finally, I would like to mention a 2nd Vidmontas, Vidmon for short. Vidmon was drunk one day and fell down the stairs, shattering his vertebrate and leaving him unable to walk correctly or to work. In response to the situation Vidmon began to drink more, a common problem here. When I first met Vidmon he was drunk and asked to borrow 5 Lita’s. We told him that if he sobered up we would put him to work at the next day at the church building. He showed up sober and began to do some landscaping for us. He has been able to make a little money by working but more importantly Vidmon broke down in tears and rededicated his life to Christ here in the building with John and I. He has vowed to stop drinking and start coming to church. The picture I have here was taken a week ago after church. Vidmon needs a lot of prayer as his addiction is very strong. Ways to Join in the Ministry: Prayer Requests: I want to thank all of you who lift me up in your prayers. I am often asked how people can pray for me and I have a few things weighing on my heart. 1. I am constantly searching for God’s direction in my life. I am wrestling with a decision (Should I stay and continue to serve in Lithuania, go back to school, or come back to work in the US, or move to serve in Africa. 2. Pray for financial support. (I am fully externally funded and do not take a salary from the school or the church.) 3. Pray for my health as the upcoming flu season is coming and because we don’t have central heating the building can get very cold in the winter and little electric heaters fail to keep up. 4. Pray that I would learn to fully rely on God. (I heard once that we trust God with big things like salvation and a virgin birth. How can we fail to trust him with little things like finances?) I have found that like my students I have started to worry about where my support would come from in a time of financial crisis. I am committed to trusting that God will bring in the finances necessary to allow me to stay and serve here in Lithuania. Although it is hard to admit and hard to let go of the fact that I am not in a position to provide for myself but have to fully rely on God. 5. Pray for safety for those who work and live in the building. And praise that all that was stolen was recovered. How to give: If you would like to partner with me and become a financial supporter of my ministry in Lithuania there are many ways to give To receive income tax credit donations designated for me checks need to be made out to: LCC International Fund and mailed to: LCC Inc., 39 Southgate Court, Suite 202, Harrisonburg, VA, 22801. Dear friends,

I am back safe and sound in Lithuania, I am sorry if I did not have a chance to see you while I was back in Ohio.

While I was home, many of you have asked us what I am doing this summer in Lithuania. For those of you whom I have not been able to personally tell or those of you who have more questions here is a link that will better show you the ministry that we are working on. Keep praying that God takes back a country that has led the world in suicides per person in 2000-2007. Please pray for the Spritual Life and Outreach Center.

News From Lithuania

Brangi Draugas (Dear Friends)
I cannot tell you how many times I have written letters home and then promptly deleted them. I have had trouble knowing what to say. So, in the end, I have convinced myself to share openly. At first this letter will feel negative, but don’t stop reading because in the end you will see the positive.
To be frank, I have had struggled finding my purpose for being in Lithuania. When I was preparing to leave the states I had grand visions of what a life of a missionary looked like, acted like, and did on a day to day basis. Most of these images came from Missions Conference at Smeltzer Road Alliance Church. I remember the pictures of people living in huts in the jungle with many kilograms of metal dangling from their ears. (Those from Smeltzer should know what I am talking about.) Those missionaries were true warriors for the cross. But upon arrival, life in Lithuania and work at LCC was different than I had envisioned. I was surprised to find that LCC set me up with a very nice apartment, in fact the nicest apartment I had ever lived in. This to me did not feel “missionaryesque”
Last year, at Dallas Baptist University I was able lead devotions and prayer time in my classroom and our head coach Blake Flickner led discipleship for our basketball team. Coach Flickner left no doubt to his team that he loved the Lord. Naively, I believed (and hoped) that a missions oriented school would follow the same basic format.
Yet, I found out, LCC acts much differently than DBU. Here students are only presented with the Gospel only in the two required theology classes where professors for these classes are schooled in fielding many of the apologetic arguments that Eastern European students may raise. In my classroom I am not to share devotions but to simply teach statistics. This partition holds true on the basketball court as well. Although I knew I was filling a need for the school, I quickly grew dissatisfied with my role spiritually both in the classroom and on the basketball court. Even though I was building solid relationships with many students for friendship evangelism, I wanted more: More hands on, more results, and more success stories. It was at this time that I began to wrestle with God.
I was working through these issues in December when I came home for Christmas, I intentionally did not ask to speak in church because I did not know what I would say. In many ways, I was disappointed and discouraged when I was home in December. I struggled asking for support for a mission, which at that point, I did not wholehearted believe in. I did not really want to return. As I returned I prayed I would find a purpose for leaving my friends and family behind.
I am writing you today to praise the Lord for His faithfulness. As the March snows melt into April showers I have a renewed sense of God’s gardening skills. LCC is founded on the idea that one man plants and another waters, but God makes it grow. My impatience and frustrations stem from one concept I failed to fully grasp, a large majority of students are unbelievers when they arrive at LCC. After four years of interacting with a Christian faculty and staff and theology classes students are saturated but it is God and His timing that will see the harvest. My role as a stats teacher and basketball coach is very much hands off, but also very much necessary for LCC to exist. But still I prayed for more!
Praise God that He answered my prayers in a big way. My church here, City Church, has a heart for reaching the city of Klaipeda. Our pastor Saul is an LCC graduate, who has an amazing vision for what our small congregation can do to impact the city of 300,000. Our church just recently undertook a HUGE project. With no building to call our own, we just bought an abandoned hotel. This building had been abandoned for 8 years but it was a perfect fit for the vision of the church. Not only could it serve as our sanctuary and the church offices, it will one day house many of our missionaries and also those in the church family who can’t afford rent. The center will also serve as a community for those recovering from alcohol and drug abuse.
About three weeks ago our church had an open house for the members to see the building. When I walked through the doors I knew this is where I needed to be. As I toured the derelict rooms I had an overwhelming sense of God’s presence. I began to be ashamed of my nice apartment and immediately knew that I would move into the church building and begin to help renovate the building. It is very primitive still and I do not have some modern conveniences such as a shower and a kitchen. But God is good. I shower at school each morning and work on the building at night. I have almost finished my first room. My goal is to have seven rooms and the bathroom finished before I come home for summer.
It is very exciting to be a part of this project. In a study in 2002 Lithuania was found to have the highest suicide rate in the world. City Church has a heart to reach the lost and hurting and the center with be that place of hope in a land full of hopeless people. It will be a place church happens not only on Sundays but all week in community life together. One day when the building is more livable it will host the first ever youth group in Klaipeda. Imagine 300,000 people and no youth group for the children.
Thinking about the potential for the building brings me so much joy and allows me to wake up in the morning even if I don’t have a hot shower to wipe the sleep from my eyes. I am also glad that my rent no longer goes to a nice apartment but goes directly into supplies for the building renovation.
God has answered my prayer and in a big way. I prayed for more and I got 47 abandoned rooms all that need massive work. When I work on these rooms, I can see the results of my labor but I can’t do it all on my own. I am inviting you to join into my ministry here. There are many ways to get involved: First I am praying that 10 people this summer would like to do a working cultural missions trip to help work on the building. The needs range from the floor with carpet all the way to the roof with leaks and everything in between. If you have two free hands we can use you. If you know someone who could be interested in this please let me know and we can work out the details. Secondly, if your schedule doesn’t allow you to travel to Lithuania, please prayerfully consider financially supporting someone who could here. Also, half of my monthly support goes directly into the building and supplies to renovate it. A gift to my support would enable me to continue to coach and teach but also aid City Church in completing the center. I have committed to working on this project until next April and am excited to see what progress can be made over the year. Finally, prayer support for this project is a must. This building can only be completed with the Lord’s help.
Specific prayer requests that I have:
My 4 Senegalese players (Ourmar, Olu, Mohammed, and Ibou) that I can continue to share Christ with them
Pray for strength and energy to complete all tasks that I need to do
Pray for my Albanian student and friend Andi Beqiraj who has been going through some troubles
Pray that for 10 people to come this summer and help on the building
Continue to pray for a friend whom I can connect with
Specific praises that I have
For God’s faithfulness
The dark days of Lithuanian winter are gone
I was able to take Oumar Seck to see some of the Passion of the Christ in a Pre-Easter Celebration (though he did not stay long)
Taking my team to work with the local orphanage (picture included)
I miss you all so much! Please contact me at any time!
